V Mac + Cheese! It’s so exciting to find you here on Substack. You totally are an OG - you were one of the first bloggers whose writing I just fell in love with. I’ve always loved your voice and style, and even your journey of taking creative writing classes put a spark in me to maybe do that too one day (I’m yet to take a class but still hope to!). Anyways, I’m excited to see your writing and look forward to following along. -From a fellow blogger who has blogged in spurts over the years.
Aw, Olivia! What a comment! It makes my artsy fartsy writer heart sing, knowing I might've had even a tiny part in planting a creative seed for you. If you're thinking about writing classes in 2024, one positive thing to come from the pandemic is that now, SO many that operate exclusively online, making it even easier to try it out. I say go for it! (I've taken a number of classes through the SF Writer's Grotto, which moved many of their courses online over the last few years. Brooklyn Writers Collective is another to check out.)
I love that! It’s so true that you planted a little creative seed in me. I will check out those online courses - thanks so much for your reply! Happy writing! :)
Victoria! I am so happy I found your writing (thanks to fellow northern Michigan creative Megan Gilger, another writer I am happy to have found here). I am an OG blogger, too, from way back when, starting in the mid-aughts after years as a journalist, and can relate to so, so much of what you’ve shared here. I’m definitely in the midst of a career/life transition--the portal!--and have been for the past few years. It’s all so interesting and challenging. And also invigorating! Especially as I continue to write here on this platform and explore creative writing after years of “building a brand.” In many ways I feel like I’m returning to myself and the writing I’ve always loved the most. But it’s also different. Still figuring out so much!
I look forward to reading more of your writing! Thank you for sharing your experience. Here’s to reinvention, on our own terms.
Hi Heather, thanks for your comment and for being here!
I feel the same in terms of returning to myself and my words—like a puzzle piece that went missing, snapping back into place.
Today the NYT published an Op-Ed from a writer who touches on a few of the things I've mentioned, which I thought was interesting (specifically because the writer is male). I truly wonder if the Internet experience—or at least, the social aspect of it—has simply shifted for us all as we've aged (or aged out?). Here's the link in case you are interested! https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/21/opinion/internet-aging-gen-z.html
My gosh Victoria this felt like you were in my life and head for the past few years. I remember meeting at Altitude in 2012. Not sure you remember me but holy smokes this is complete truth and I hadn’t thought of it as reinvention but that’s it. I needed that word. So glad Jess shared your post in her newsletter and I found you here. Soooo many of us are finding substack to be a comforting space for reshaping who and what we do now as women. That image of Carrie feels honestly and deeply personal haha. Wow. Thank you for all of this. Cheering you on.
Thus far on Substack, one great thing (among many) is rediscovering old Internet friends, and more specifically, realizing that what drew us to finding community online in the 2010s is still very much real and living. Maybe the magic ISN'T actually gone. Which is to say -- of course I remember you! Of course I remember The Fresh Exchange! Of course I've followed along on your homesteading adventures! I think all of our years finding kinship online means it's virtually impossible to forget the pioneers who were making alongside us in the early days.
I'm so glad you're here and this piece resonated with you. Cheers to us, for reshaping and molding and evolving and trying something new. To reinvention, always.
Not at OG blogger, but this resonates with me trying to reinvent myself to reenter the workforce after taking several years off to just be mom. Don't want to go back to pre-kids career, so now what?
